Theater Mogul

It occurred to me that I should probably explain what my internship will entail...in all honesty, I don't rightfully know yet. I will be working Mondays thru Fridays from 10 to 6 (this is supposedly a typical workday in New York - I'm not complaining).

Theater Mogul is an international theatrical
production agency. Its business approach is to buy plays directly from the playwright, so that the company can then license the rights and produce productions. They typically target shows that require very few actors and can be produced inexpensively. Their current production is Defending the Caveman, which has played in over 30 countries and is currently touring the United States with nine actors alternating the single role.

The office in New York is a small one, consisting of f
ewer than ten people who specialize in areas such as general management, advertising, and booking. I will basically be filling in the gaps wherever they need help. Hopefully I'll get experience in several areas of arts management. Should be a good time.

Here I Am!

This was a good day - celebratory, you may even say, if you were to also follow Kelly's blog. So we got into the city today and, after spending a great length of time experiencing the confusing one-way streets and lack of parking spaces that make up New York City, arrived at our...um...humble dwelling. I discovered that my room at the 305 is located 4 excruciating flights up - I hope I'll get over this minor setback, but only time can tell. After Rob and I moved everything in, he promptly headed out and Kelly and I were left to get things in order...5 hours later, we were ready to hit up the town.

We decided to stop by the lottery for 9 to 5, because it closes on Sunday and everyone loves Allison Janney. In my way, I was sure we would not win (the odds were roughly 50:1)...but I was pleasantly suprised to hear Kelly's name called out. The show was pretty alright, but the three leading ladies - Allison Janney (of Drop Dead Gorgeous fame - yes, that is her best work), Stephanie J. Block, and Megan Hilty - were phenomenal. Not a bad way to start of my fall theatre experience...which I assure you there will be much more of.

And finally, we of course made a stop by the TKTS booth in Times Square. I was hesitant about this whole no traffic in Times Square thing, but it's actually not so bad - cars still drive on one side of the street, and the other is reserved for pedestrians. Good decision, New York City - I approve.

I have no idea what else we plan on doing in New York, but at some point we need to buy groceries, which is a foreign concept to me. As is the cooking of the groceries. I guess I'll just feel my way through for a while...wish me luck. Till next time, peace out.

Well, I'm On My Way...

Welcome to my blog, everyone! I am currently sitting in a hotel room in Ledgewood, New Jersey - tomorrow, we will make the final stretch of our drive and arrive in New York City. For those who are unaware, I will be doing an apprenticeship for the fall 2009 semester through the New York Arts Program. I will be working for a company called Theater Mogul, which will provide me with experience in arts management.

This blog will be dedicated to documenting my experiences this semester - with my internship and the program, as well as whatver else I decide to do in the city. I'm sure we'll go see a bunch of plays, do some sight-seeing, visit landmarks, etc. I've never had a blog before, so I don't honestly know how much I will update this (let alone what I will write about), but I hope that it will happen daily - I make no promises, though.

So thanks for reading...I will definitely miss everyone at home and Albion this semester, but hopefully I'll get something out of the whole experience. Farewell for now.
